‘Haar’ is a thermal wind on the east coast of Scotland that blows inland from the cold North Sea during the summer months, often bringing fog with it. Haar also means hair in German. I find this name therefore a fitting title for my subject and the goals I have set myself for this project (see below).
In my last blog post, I mentioned that since my exhibition in spring, I've moved away from the subject of portraits and have since been trying out very different things and looking for new creative approaches. This phase will probably continue for a while yet. However, at the beginning of October, I suddenly felt like painting a portrait again to balance things out.
However, some things are different and new in this interim project:
In my previous portraits, I usually worked from a black and white photo template and implemented my own colour concept. In this project I am working from a colour template and would like to implement a somewhat more differentiated colour concept. In some areas of the painting, I will again take liberties with the colours, but for the main areas of the figure (face, skin, hair) I want to stick to the colours of the template as much as possible
So far I have only painted small-format paintings with oil and I want to find out whether I can also paint large areas with oil colours and spontaneous brushstrokes
For this painting I would like to work with acrylic and oil colours for the first time and probably also use spray paint
The German artist Torsten Wolber, whose painting technique and skill I greatly admire, recently posted a new portrait on Instagram in which he worked mainly with horizontal and vertical brushstrokes. I think the result is fantastic and I'd like to try it out with this work too
Hair is one of the most difficult things for me to paint. Torsten Wolber is also a master in this area (see the example above). I deliberately chose a picture template where I can practise this extensively.
Over the past few months, I have been fiddling around with AI image generators and I find many of the results very fascinating because they are now of very good quality and because I have the freedom to generate scenes that look very realistic at first glance and only trigger certain irritations on closer inspection. As a template for this project, I decided to choose an AI-generated image motif for the first time
